oh. I will check. Thanks. I think I will get more than one copy, because I love BR. I think it is such a great movie, and I am almost finished with the book. Thanks MikeJonas. You are a big help.
What about the BR1 Special Version single disc at BattleRoyaleDVD.com? I was considering buying that one because I was pleased with the quality of the boot of BR2 I got there. Also, I think it'd be great if someone could put the Starmax version together with the Tartan subs, I know I'd but that boot in a heartbeat. The subs are the only thing turning me away from the Starmax version.
Okay, I ordered the NTSC copy from TartanVideo.com about a week ago, and I have yet to receive an email regarding its status. I've tried emailing their information address (multiple times actually) but they won't reply. Is this website even legit?? I'm really kind of worried...
Hi, I'm currently reading the novel Battle Royale in English. I'd like to be able to view the movie after I've finished it. I've already bid on the TARTAN (UK) NTSC 5.1 (ORIGINAL VERSION ) at ebay for $25. Is that too much or too little? It seems kind of low, but I'm pretty sure it's not a bootleg. Also, I'm thinking of buying the Korean Special Version for the extras at www.battleroyaledvd.com/br.html Is that a reliable place to buy from? Also, is it worth it? The only reason I'm buying it is for all the extras. It's the only one I can find with any extras at all. Does anyone know where I can get a good dvd with all the extras? I can't seem to find any dvds with good subtitles and good extras for regular Region 1 NTSC dvd player. Thanks!
No. Buy the legitimate version from yesasia or dvdasian. Personally, I think the Tartan version is overrated, especially in terms of video quality. The Starmax is great, but the extras have no subtitles and the subs on the movie are less than perfect.
OK. Well, I tried to read this thread and I became incredible confused between Tartar, Milky, bootlegs, VCD'z, and the like. I have seen this movie about 10 times between showing to ALL of my friends. I've been watching a rip that I downloaded off of IRC and I think it is about time to upgrade. I want just a few simple things. 1. I want to purchase BR and get ALL the special features, including Gaiden. The messed up translation does not bother me too too much because this movie has actually inspired me to learn Japanese in college. If getting everything means buying two seperate DVD's then that will be fine. 2. I would love to order a copy of BR2, but I have no idea which one is any good, if any. Slightly silly subtitles again do not bother me too much. If anyone could provide me to links to the best DVD's and the best stores for them (I know this is opinionated) I would be much obliged.
Then, provided that you have a player that is all region and can do pal to ntsc conversion, having everything is quite simple, though expensive! The Starmax version has, IMHO, the best video quality of the film. However, there are Japanese DVDs that are allegedly better, though I know nothing about them. The Starmax version does not have any subs for the extras. The Tartan release with the DTS track has all of the Starmax extras with the Gaiden doc and they are all subbed. The Tartan has better subs, but inferior video quality. The Starmax will cost you around $27 shipped. The Tartan will be slightly more, since it was only recently released. I have an extra copy I can sell you for $28 if you are interested. In any case, I don't think cd-wow.com still stocks the BR DVDs, but BRII was readily available from them for less than $10 shipped. That's the jist of it.
Sorry, I forgot to mention that the DVD's have to be Region 0 in order for me to play them as I do not have a region free player. So, DrGerbil, the Tartan release with the DTS sound has ALL of the extras, including the subbed Gaiden? And if so and it can play on normal american DVD players, do you have a link to it!?
Yes, both the Starmax and Tartan are R0. However, the Tartan is PAL, so unless your player can do the conversion (or you have a dvd-rom drive) you will need an external converter. They are fairly cheap and can be found at any radio shack for around $15. Yes, from what i've seen, the Tartan version has ALL of them, including the Gaiden doc. Basically, the Tartan version has just about every extra feature ever produced for this movie. The Tartan set is here if you want more info: www.xploitedcinema.com/dv...?title=688
On the Tartan, they are very accurate. On the Starmax, they are fairly accurate, all except for the newly inserted scenes that were added for the special version.
Can you tell me how this version is, because if I buy the PAL version, it's turning into a $60 DVD! So, am I going to miss a lot of the special features in the version that I just linked to?
You won't get the Gaiden documentary. Also, the extras on the Starmax (which you linked to) are not subbed. The Gaiden doc is only available on the Tartan disks, both the old Tin and the new DTS set. It's pretty much a pick your poison proposition. The Tartan set has excellent subs, but also suffers from faint ghosting video wise. Basically, if you care about the extras, the Tartan is the way to go, as it is loaded. If you just want to watch the movie in the best way possible, get the Starmax.
found this site which compares the different versions also shows image stills and lots of info should hopefully make your choices easier
