Well i got the DVD from caiman and im assuming its legitament. It was sealed like a normal dvd is and it came with a spring 2005 tartan video preview thingy. The back of the case did look slightly different than the one pictured on this site, but not bad, revamped slightly. The disk looked a little different too. Also not like a bottleg, more like tartan may have changed it a bit. If anyone else is questioning ordering from caiman, I feel that they are pretty safe.
I am new to this site so you may have already discussed this, but there apears to be some copy of BR1 and BR2 for sale at www.Facets.org. I don't know if they're bootleg because both movies are pretty pricey. BR1 is like $50, and BR2 is $60. At the website just search for Battle royale, and they are the first two on the list. there is no picture provided, but the BR1 DVD is listed as temporarily out of stock, while BR2 is on order. As a side note, the company offers a free catalog that lists a lot of great movies along with a brief summary. they even have Kinji Fukasaku listed as a Director to watch, with a few of his films listed under his name.
I am familiar with Facets... they sell many bootlegs, mostly because the films they carry are often esoteric and obscure. The bootlegs are for films without legitimate R1 releases.
---------------------------- I'm from the sixties but no one has ever accused me of being a hippie. I never had much interest in the Woodstock crowd, which partied to change the world, while real people were starving to death in Africa. I never liked Peter, Paul & Mary or The Carpenters and, despite being the era of "free love", I still had to pay for it.
Pretty Sure I just bought two bootlegs. Got them from an Asian import shop in town.
Haven't watched either yet, I've seen a bad bootleg of BR before on VHS the curretn BR that I have appears to have the French cover, with Beat Takeshi's face in the upper left corner, but it's got a red bar over the top saying "special 122 minute Director's Cut DTS edition"
I knew it was a little iffy though because the credits are listed on the bottom of the front cover and are slightly blurred. But I tested it and it plays in an old American Xbox. Says it's put out by HK Video Co.
Now moreso than that one is the BR2 I got from the same shop. It too has what appears to be the French cover from what I've found on this site and some other research but the BR2 logo is Black over the sky not white, and the grass underneath the tank is blurred from about a centimeter on down. This one would not play in a PS2 or Xbox (I'm in the US by the way) but does play in Windows Media player 9 on my and my roomy's computer. We both have a lot of Divx codecs installed because of editing software though.
It has english subtitles, but from what I've seen so far they're only when people talk. On the back it has the Region "all" listed with NTSC and MPG-5 And it is the Revenge version.
So, I couldn't find either of these exact versions anywhere for sale online so I'm guessing they're bootlegs, am I wrong? Does anyone else know about these versions? Are they good/bad translations? I'd like a BR2 I could play on a regular DVD player. Oh and this BR2 says it's put out by Red Sun.
I can't vouch for the BR 1 DVD you have but it definitely sounds to me like a bootleg.
As far the BR 2 DVD you have, it's a boot of the Japanese Region 2 version of Battle Royale II : Revenge. Cannibal King, a seller of asian DVD's on ebay, subbed the film himself, or rather had a friend do the translations for him, as the official Japansese release of that DVD does not have eng subs.
Right now that's the only way to see the film subtitled until Tartan, a company from the UK, releases their version of the film in late October.
I have that version, the BR Revenge bootleg you have, and to me the subs are fine...considering it's the only subtitled version currently available.
I payed 20 bucks for each and was just wondering how bad of a deal that was. I've watched the first 20 minutes of BR2 now (don't have a lot of time lol) and teh subs are pretty good but there are some typos. And the special stuff doesn't seem to have any subs so oh well to that.
I just wish I could play it on a regular dvd player, in my case being xbox or ps2, but it runs alright on the PC. Some notes of interest are that selecting the second audio option (2.0) makes it skip to "chapter 53" from the software's perspective, and doesn't seem to change the audio at all. And when it auto-plays, it lags a little at the beginning, but it's not pc performance related because on two different pc's it lagged the same way at the same exact frames.
Thanks for the insight though. I guess if nothing else I should be greatful for someone who took the time to sub it and find a way to at least get it out in the states. And I guess that would mean this shop I got it from buys off ebay.

Eh... Not to rub salt into an open wound but it's only bad b/c you could've gotten a legimate version for around the same price as you paid for two bootlegs.
But don't feel bad, I paid $20 + shipping for my first BR DVD and it turned out to be a bootleg But, IMO, it was a damn good one so I didn't mind so much.

Hmm.... I never had any trouble w/ my BRII DVD as you seem to be having but then again I bought it from the seller who *makes* them directly. Chances are you got a boot of a boot...someone probably got a hold of one of Cannibal King's BRII disks and just started making their own copies of it. So perhaps the problems you're having stem from somewhere in the copying of the copy of the DVD...maybe your seller, or someone, screwed up. Or maybe it's just a faulty disk.
Just me theorizing is all...
I don't know how much money you have to blow (or invest, depending on your disposition ) but if you are unhappy w/ your purchases, there are resaonably priced legit versions of BR out there that'll play in *any* american player.
Is the version of BR2 in that box set the "requiem" version? I wouldn't feel so bad buying it if that were so because then I'd have the two different versions. It's kind of interesting about that too, because it shows how much editing affects a film. I own three different versions of Brazil, and the story is litterally different in each of them.
But anyway, and do you know if the specials have english subs in that one? It seems that that is the Korean release which just happens to lucky enough have english subs and be Region (ALL). Do all Korean releases normally have english subs? Makes me wonder why I got a legit version of Volcano Highschool then, because I imagine the shop owner had a Korean dealer for that one.
I was unaware that English was a common-enough language in Korea for them to include it on a lot of their DVDs.
Anyway, thanks again, brings some piece of mind to know where this stuff comes from, or at least, get closer.
I just bought a bootleg dvd at Otakon (an anime convention, for those of you who don't know). It's the special version without the tan slipcase. At least it plays like the real thing . I also bought Kung Fu Hustle, which I'm also pretty sure is a bootleg.
Just bought a version of BR off of amazon.com (here). It's the Special Version of BR, with the horrible subtitling job corrected in the additional scenes. Some of the special features are subtitled, and some aren't: in addition, the 50-minute documentary (Gaiden, I believe, but it's not named as such) is included. However, another BR documentary cuts out about 3 minutes in, which is disappointing. Seems like a slightly altered copy of the PAL release of the Special Version.
The cover is cool and the features are welcome, so I guess it's a pretty good bootleg despite the documentary issue.
Yeah. I think someone mentioned elsewhere, that the cover is a hacked but obvious copy of one of the Australian releases (the first print of the retail version, I gather): www.battleroyalefilm.net/video/db1.html(scroll to the bottom).
If one examines the cover, there are no markings indicating a distributor (the markings that indicate the Australian distributor Shock/Kaleidoscope are probably covered by that "122 Minute Directors Cut" rectangle, underneath a slapped-on, Japanese-only Toei logo. There's just something fishy about a DVD cover not once identifying the company that released it.
BOOTLEG BR & BRII DVD SET I got this bootleg and it is pretty good. I got it from Bullmoose Music Warehouse! LOL! I was wondering if any one else had this bootleg too. I do and I really enjoy it. Do you guys think that because I have a bootleg that I am cheap person?
