The article that announced that remake rights were being negotiated for the Japanese sci-fi film "Casshern" also mentioned that the 1977 romantic drama "Yellow Handkerchief of Happiness," the first film to win a Japanese Academy Award for Best Picture, is also due for an American remake.
Arthur Cohn is set to produce a remake of Yoji Yamada's 1977 film "Yellow Handkerchief." The new version will star William Hurt as an ex-convict recently released from prison for the accidental murder of another man, as well as Maria Bello as his ex-wife and Eddie Redmayne as a teen he meets on a road trip.
Udayan Prasad ("My Son the Fanatic") is directing the project, which will begin production next month in Louisiana. Japan's Shochiku Co., which produce the original film, will distribute the remake in Japan.
Looks like the pedigree is a little more complicated than just a "remake." The original Japanese film is based on a New York Post article, and while
the rights discussions did somehow involve the Japanese film, the American film can be said to be more directly based on the New York Post story.
