Mimiko Akamatsu slowly exited her car. The day at the restaurant had been hard. Working as a waitress, everyday she had to support the client's complaint about the quality of the food, the temperature of the room, the service's speed and countless other necessities. Mimiko was very pissed off. She had difficulty to prevent herself from throwing the plates of food at the client's face whenever they rudely backtalked to her or complained about the food being too hot or too cold, it really got on her last nerve. As she was entering the building in which she lived, she tried to calm herself down. She knew that if she had to talk to her stupid son in such a state, she would end up hitting him. What would the neighbours say if they heard an agonized shout of pain? She opened the door of her tiny apartment and suddenly, the sound of an annoying electronical music invaded her ears. She soon identified the source of the sound: the bedroom at the tip of the hallway, her son Yoshio's room.

''Can you please turn down the sound on your #%%%#%% stupid videogames, Yoshio!?'' Mimiko shouted angrily. As she began preparing supper, Mimiko could not help but think to herself that her son was a total failure. She remembered how much she was happy when she gave birth to her son. She had very high expectations for him. She wanted him to be intelligent, physically fit, and successful. She thought that he would be able to leave the world of poverty in which he was born. But, with her son's growing up came disappointment. Yoshio turned out to be…well… a total loser. Overweight, he could not even run for more than 30 seconds without being hyper-ventilated. His marks were poor. Mimiko could not even look at her son without being overwhelmed by disappointment and bitterness. Why she should be the one to have a loser as a son?

''ARE YOU GOING TO #%%%#%% CLOSE THIS STUPID VIDEO GAME?'' Mimiko shouted. Mumbling with fury, she walked to her son's room. Opening the door, her eyes darted to the television in which you can see a little Mario Bros jumping happily and, then, the heavy body of her son, who was laying unconscious on the ground, an empty bottle of pills beside him. Suddenly understanding what happened, she slowly approached the body of her son and placed her hand on his throat. He was still alive. She wandered for a moment if she should let him die. Letting this failure, this mistake, this loser slowly leaving life, slowly leaving her.

Yoshio Akamatsu( Male Student #01) slowly wakes up. Looking at the white ceiling, he thought for the moment that he was back at the hospital, where he had lived since his suicide attempt was only a dream, that the coming back to school, the field trip were only dreams, that Honami was a dream. But, the voices of teenagers wandering out loud where they were brought Yoshio back to reality. He was not at the hospital, although the spare white room could looks like one. Around Yoshio, people were slowly waking up. Yoshio looked briefly at Keita Iijima (Male Student #02), one of his rare friends, who was looking at his now empty coke bottle with disappointment. Behind Iijima, Utsumi( Female Student #02), the female class representative, was asking a confused Noda (Female Student #17) if she was alright. As he was looking around, Yoshio could not help but feel completely panicked. His heart was beating fast and he was shaking with fear. Honami should be here. She would calm me down and make me laugh. Yoshio looked desperately at the only door in the room, hoping that Honami would enter. But it was not the feminine and beautiful silhouette of the young nurse who had taken care of him during his stay at hospital that appeared in the doorframe, but a small man accompanied by soldiers armed with machine guns. In a clear and cheerful voice that could not erase the coldness in his eyes, he said:

"Well. I'm sure your all wondering what we are doing here. You probably all watched The Program before. Some of you probably watch it religiously well then good news for all of you. Your class been selected for the next participants in the hit TV show The Program."

Yoshio's heartbeat stopped for a second. The Program?! No…No… It is funny how life could be so ironic. 2 weeks ago, he did not even succeed to kill himself while that was what he wanted to do most. Now, he had regained the will to live, he was going to die and he could do nothing about it. He was going to die, he knew it. He was not even able to kill himself, so imagine, killing someone else? He was a loser, a failure.

Yoshio was looking at the ceiling of his hospital bedroom. He arrived there the day before, after his mother called the ambulance and had finally woken up. He had been there, doing nothing except staring at the ceiling for hours, when a soft voice pulled Yoshio out of his daydreaming. A young and small nurse smiled at him softly.

"Hi! It's Yoshio, right?''

Yoshio nodded moodily.

"Hi Yoshio! I'm Miss Baba! But you can call me Honami! I'm bringing your lunch!''

Yoshio just noticed she was holding a tray of spaghetti. She gave him the meal and as he was eating, they talked a bit. Honami soon turned out to be a funny and caring girl and for the first time in months, Yoshio felt really happy, just being with her, listening to her and laughing at her jokes, too shy to say more than yes or no. As she was about to leave, Yoshio noticed one of her earrings fell on the ground. Trying to get out of the bed to take the earring and give her back, his heavy body got caught in the sheets and he felt loudly on the ground. His head hurting badly, he took the earring and gave it to a worried Honami. He said in a shy voice.

''Take it. Sorry, I'm really clumsy. I'm such a loser. Sorry''

''Don't say this! You aren't a loser! Yes, most people can leave a bed without falling on the ground but most people would not have care about a fallen earring. You may not be the most habile guy on earth, but you have heart and heart might be the biggest strength a person can have!''

You aren't a loser,

Yoshio was now outside the ship, the first on the island. Funnily, the guy who was the last in everything was the first on the alphabetical order of the class. Yoshio opened his bag from which he exited holding a crossbow. He stared at it, not knowing what he should do. He heard Iijima running, whining out of fear. He looked at his back disappearing into the woods. I'm not a loser. I can win this. I have to. They all think I am a loser. I will prove them wrong. Mom, Sasagawa, Kuranoga, everyone. They all think I'm a loser. They will shoot at me first. I would be their first target. I always had been. I have to kill them before they kill me. It is time to stop being the victim, always the victim. victim of mom, victim of bullies, victim of myself…No, this time, I will be the attacker.

Standing up, he picked up the crossbow and approached the ship, aiming the crossbow at the door. One of the lights of the ship was lighting his face. A clear and happy voice suddenly broke the night silence.

''Akamatsu, is it you?''

It was Utsumi, the female class representative. She was a cheerful, outgoing and optimistic girl. A true leader, she was liked by mostly everyone and was nice with everybody, even him, Yoshio.

''I knew people were not going to give up to a stupid game like this. ''

Utsumi approached, smiling. Shoot her. Just shoot her.

''We are going to wait for everyone and then we will find a way off the island. With people like Mimura, Motobuchi and Satomi, we will surely discover a way to break the system!''

Suddenly, Utsumi's smile disappeared as she saw that Yoshio was aiming his crossbow at her.

''Sorry, Utsumi. It's the game, right? Kill or be killed. I'm not a loser! I'm not going to be a loser…I am sick of being a loser!''

For the first time in her life, Utsumi seemed out of words. After a time of silence, she finally spoke.

"Akamatsu, no, don't do this. There are other ways. We are not forced to play by their rules. We are all going to come back home. ''

Yoshio lowered the crossbow. She is right.

Yukie's smile reappeared again.

"Yeah! I knew you could not play a horrible game like this! Everything will be going well. I can assure you, you will see your home, your mom, your dad again. I promise you.''

And, as Yukie mentioned his mother, Yoshio could hear Mimiko's voice filling his head telling how much a failure he was. You are a loser. A total failure. A disappointment. As these thoughts were invading his head, he raised his crossbow and pulled the trigger, as he was shouting.

"I'M NOT A LOSER!''

He saw the arrow cutting through the air and penetrating Yukie's arm. As a cry of pain erupted from her mouth, blood beginning to appear on the sleeve of her sailor uniform. Yoshio's crossbow was now just in front of Utsumi's face. Only one movement of finger could end her life. Only one second and it would be all done and finished for her, but, to Yoshio's surprise, she did not seem afraid, she was still smiling, although tears were rolling down her cheeks.

''Akamatsu, I know you don't really want to do this. You are not like this, Akamatsu. Always nice with everyone…You have a heart. I know you can't kill someone.''

You have a heart and having a heart might be the biggest strength a person can have. Honami, what would she think of me?

Shaking with a mix of fear and guilt, unable to look any longer to Yukie's smiling face and her wounded arm, Yoshio ran away. Ignoring Yukie calling for him to come back, he ran through the woods, trying to fly away from guilt, fear, death…He had almost killed Utsumi, a girl who was always there for everyone. He could no longer pretend that Honami was right. She was all wrong on him. He did not have a heart. He was just a loser, a #%%%#%%, fat, horrible loser. Suddenly, as he was running, he stumbled on a tree's root. He fell on the ground and, suddenly, he heard a voice saying :

''Yoshio, it's you? I'm so glad I finally found someone!''

Yoshio raised his head and saw Keita Iijima, a nervous smile on his lips, holding in one hand a kitchen knife and in the other hand, a coke.
