I finally got around to seeing it. Was it as good as the original? Certainly not. Not even half as good! Was it a solid movie? Heck yes. Beats the stuffing out of the crap we get here in the USA. But I still wish Noriko had a bigger role.
Hmm.. maybe, but I think the cameo at the end was good enough, I can't imagine her having a big role in this fillm ... the film just, wasn't suited to her character.
where's the rule saying Mods aren't allowed to voice thier opinions on characters they dislike?
"Magical or Merriment. Communion with Nimrod. I devote a prayer to the sight of you disrobed and laying on your side Magical or Merriment. Communion with Nimrod. Once I've laid my hands upon you, there's no escape."
from what I read..I noticed that no one really mentioned that almost all of the beginning events were pretty much copied from the first one.
Taku was the first to wake up in the bus. He woke up his friends, the reporter, the tapping on the window with the lights and helicopters.
The nife throwing. The friend dying cus he rebeled.
Picture take on bus = football signed on bus.
Person's necklace being activated. Person getting pushed around the room. Necklace blowing up.
The way the (almost exact) cart with the bags came in. The lady in the helicopter replaced the crazy lady that explained the game in the first one (thought that wasn't copied as much.)
I might've missed some...but those were some things that kind of ruined it for me.
The first one had much more of a story and better events that made you really think. I liked shuya's character in the first better than second.
The second one was actually kind of pointless..
BRII seems more for people that are all for action and less story and impact.
What is it about Battle Royale 2 that makes it inferior to the first film to so many people?
For me, I find that Battle Royale 2 is too over the top, from the acting of the teacher Riki and eye popping Taku, to the hundreds of "Trained Soliders" that the 3 prior school kids kill, even though they didn't know how to use a gun a few days before (except Shuya).
Due to the success of the first one, they must of had more money to spend on BR2, which can be seen in the good special effects, but BR2 feels more like a traditional war film, than the child/island thing the first one.
The fact that the children wear school uniforms in the first one emphasises that they are only school children, but in the second one they wear camoflauged army uniforms, so at times you could forget their age.
Also, I don't really feel attached to any of the kids in BR2.
When you think of BR1, there are scenes which instantly stick out in your mind, the lighthouse scene, when Kiriyama kills the two girls with the megaphone, the final showdown of Kawada and Kiriyama in the ring of fire, etc. However I find there aren't any scenes in BR2 that stick out.
I would have prefered if BR2 was more similar to BR, with kids forced to kill each other, maybe perhaps in a different location like an abandoned school/hospital or something. Even though people could argue that it would be the same film churned over again, this is the Battle Royale that people fell in love with. In conclusion, Battle Royale 2 just doesn't "feel" like a Battle Royale, if you know what I mean.

Your thoughts?
In my opinion, I think that there are *some* scenes in BRII that stick out. Kuze's death scene, Shuya mourning his last class and the end.
I agree that it doesn't have the same feel; but it still has the BR factors: collars etc.
The ending part which shows all the students pictures, smiling or not, I thought was powerful. Even more so than the original BR ending (the students class picture is shown). Then after that it shows the BRII students as a class, as it did in BR.
It didn't at all feel like a war film to me. The acting wasn't bad. (C'mon, for some of these kids it was their first role-- give 'em a break!) I hate that people say that Taku's eyes popped out; he couldn't help it, the actor who played him might've been born with big eyes... not his fault.
It may not have the same feel, but it was still an excellent movie and in my opinion, I think it lives up to the original BR.
I've seen BR2 twice now and both times I was BORED. This movie is hollow, in fact after the first hour I didn't enjoy one scene except Riki's hilarious death.
I can't even remember any characters. Compared to BR1 where after first viewing I could discuss characters with friends, here I don't remember ANY. ZERO characterisation.
2/10
I enjoyed the landings and funny Riki but the rest was rubbish. ESPECIALLY how they made me hate the main chaarcter from the first film for becoming nothing more than a murdering terrrist.
Why are you reading this? Go outside. Cause some mayhem!
i liked BR-2. not as good as the first but that was expected! ive read too many comments about how its anti-american and therefore bad. instead of repeating ive just pasted an earlier post in response to such nonsense.
"i thought it was refreshing in the current media climate of propaganda like fox news and cnn and rubbish like that. one film that only a few non-japanese will watch sure does make you yanks quiver doesnt it. im from england and this is the kind of blind pseudo-patriotism that we brits make fun of you guys about. not as good as the first but i feel its almost a totally different film and agenda."
so i liked it and different to the hollywood action flicks we have become clones watching.
I just watched the Special Edition of Battle Royale to and compared to 9/10 of the normal edition i gotta give this a 7/10, firstly for ruining the great begining what was my favourite, specially Shuyya declaring war.
Also the slow motion scenes were just going a bit to far, these are what gave it a -1 rating, due to some death scenes were just ruined to become slow motion...
It just didn't feel like Battle Royale. Unlike in the first film, I didn't get attached to any of the characters. Hardly any personality was portrayed and most of them were just seen dying - and that was their screentime.
In the original film, you had quite a bit of screentime for each character. (EG Takako had a large scene to herself, as did Hirono) whereas you'd have 6 - 12 students dying at a time in the sequel.
I didn't even know who the ones who died were!
The only character I got attached to was Haruka Kuze, she had two scenes and then died. Overall, the film seemed rushed. There was plenty of opportunities to put more scenes into it.
The movie was 2:30 long. I think they didnt want to add anymore and the movie was portraying D-Day's famous Normandy Invasion where hundreds of lives were lost even before they got onto the beach. I think that was portrayed very very well. I would give it a 9.5/10. One of the best movies Ive ever seen. I was engulfed in it the whole movie wanting to know what happened next. It was also one of the only movies to make me cry. But yeah the characters that DID get shown, I got attached to. Well everyone got attached to Kuze. She reminded me of a friend of mine who also has diabetes and it always pains me to watch him inject himself. Only that she injected through the stomach and him through his finger. But yeah another character that caught my interest was Saki. She was probably one of the better characters of the film because one, shes cute as hell, and 2, she was Shuya's number 2 woman. If it was up to me, Id have let her live... But all in all... I loved this movie and of course the original. The 2 movies are now in my top 5 favorite movies of all time. I even got my english teacher to watch the movie. He loves it and all we do is talk about BR in class while the jock kids are like WTF are they talking about??? But yeah the series definitely is one of the best ever made and its japanese. The music is a whole different story... just how well the Warsaw Philharmonic played. They are amazing and I wish I could play in their Horn section. They never cease to amaze me since they played PSU's soundtrack.
